Who should look after your pet While your away?

A Cattery or small animal boarding establishment or a professionally trained and caring pet sitter?

We all know just how hectic life can be when it comes to work and family ties and sometimes, we just need to get away for a holiday or day trip to unwind and relax with our loved ones.

Getting away can become stressful when you need to think about organising and providing care for the animals who can’t travel with you. Therefore, the question is.Who should take care of our animals while we are away from home?.
A Cattery or small animal boarding establishment or a professionally trained and caring pet sitter?

Also, it is worth considering what effect your decision may have on your pets’ happiness, behaviour, and welfare and if it’s actually viable to move your pets in the first place. For example, it would be impractical to move pets such as chickens or birds who live in large enclosures or aviaries, and obviously a pet sitter or home visit service would be most suitable in these cases.

So, let’s focus on the biggest proportion of pet ownership such as Cats for example.
Although much of what we will share here could also be transferred over for many other types of pets, such as rabbits, hamsters, guinea pigs, etc.

Is a Cattery Worth Considering?

Is a cattery or small animal boarding establishment really the best choice?” Let’s look at this from a cat’s perspective.

cat in a cage versus being fed in their own home while your away

Is a cattery or small animal boarding establishment really the best choice?” Let’s look at this from a cat’s perspective.

It is proven by many experts that catteries are stressful for cats and unless a cat has grown used to being confined to a cattery from a very young age, then in all likely hood they will suffer a degree of stress. Now the amount of stress that your cat may suffer, will inevitably depend on the experience of the staff and the quality of the establishment in which they are being kept.

Whilst we may consider a cattery to be a safe and comfortable environment for our cats and a lovely place for them to stay for a holiday, your cat most definitely does not feel the same.

Cats can become stressed very easily and are then more prone to getting ill and picking up viruses. In some cases, they may even stop eating or develop behavioral changes.

There are numerous reasons why even the most modern and caring catteries can be stressful for your cat, so let’s look at why your cat gets so stressed.

Cats really don’t like change

Cats are notoriously territorial animals. They will nearly always stay within an area they know and most of the time they are not into adventuring into unidentified and new places.

If you have ever experienced moving into a new property with your cat, then you are sure to have witnessed their utter disgust at being plonked in a new environment.

The cat’s agenda when this happens is to just try and hide, fight and escape at every given opportunity to be able to return to their old territory which they know and love.

Obviously with a lot of time and the extra attention we manage to re-settle our cats into their new environment.

So, you can imagine a cat being placed into a cattery and then being left without even knowing a single person or animal there, naturally, this is going to induce stress in your cat.

Cats don’t understand that you will be back to collect them!

Cats have developed quite a bond with their human carers and are true companions to those who care for them.

They will undoubtedly miss you when you’re away and they simply do not understand when we try to tell them, “We are coming back, and we will come to collect you.” In a cat’s mind, they have no idea if you are ever coming back and may feel they have been abandoned. This can be especially true of cats that may have already experienced trauma from the past or have been re-homed previously.

Cats are happy to be alone, but also love human company!

Although cats are very independent and can be solitary animals, they also crave human touch and company, which in turn helps to combat boredom and reduces the risk of separation anxiety.

Although many catteries will do their best to comfort cats and give them attention, play with them, etc. It is just not possible to provide the time your cat really needs to bond and relax.

Cats Don’t generally like other cats from different households!

While it is true that Feral cats in the wild will very often live in groups, mostly with other related cats and domesticated cats are happy to live in a family group, which may consist of you, your children, or other pets in the home.

It is also well known that domesticated cats do not like other cats that aren’t part of their family group.

So, it would be very unlikely to see a cat making friends with another cat from next door or further up the street.

This being true your cat is not going to be happy with seeing or smelling an unknown cat living directly next door in another booth of a cattery.

Your cat will also quite possibly even smell the scent of the previous cat that stayed in the enclosure before, and this is enough for a cat to feel threatened by an unseen menace.

This combined with being confined to a small area, where they may not get the room to exercise and play sufficiently. Results in boredom which will undoubtedly cause a stress reaction in your cat.

Do Cats get used to being placed in a cattery away from home?

All cats are different and have different personalities, some cats will adapt after a few days and others will simply pine and become ill.

A more resilient cat will fare better, but even the most relaxed cats may still struggle with the environment of a cattery and miss the company of human contact.

Obviously nervous cats or cats that have experienced trauma in the past are least likely to cope with being in a Cattery and an alternative should always be sought.

What’s the alternative if you want to keep your cat happy and relaxed?

Cat and Pet feeding (Home visit services) or Pet sitting in your home can be a great alternative to catteries.
This allows your pets to stay in an environment that they are familiar with, causing the least amount of disruption to their normal routine and therefore significantly less stress is placed on your beloved animals.
Owners should be able to get away on a holiday or have a day away, without worrying, especially those who may have had bad experiences in the past.

So, for this reason Adored Animals Hospitality are dedicated to your pets and will invest our time in getting to know your individual animals, their unique personalities and exactly what their requirements are to keep them happy and relaxed.
Care will be taken and plenty of love provided in your absence, with a no rush service and carers who are always striving to go the extra mile.

Professional carers who are trained, DBS checked, and fully insured will visit your home to feed and fuss your pets while you are away. Provides you with peace of mind that your pets are relaxed, well cared for and your property has added security with regular visits.
